Gsm modem to send /receive sms in united states

I want to develop an application to send/receive sms via a gsm modem. I had ordered Huawei E220 but it didn't work in US, probably was a defective piece and it was a pain since i had ordered it from malaysia it took like 15 days to reach me here in US and then it didn't work. I am looking for a GSM modem vendor in US and also looking for a modem that works on a linux machine.

Has anyone used a modem that worked here? I am looking to buy nokia 31 gsm modem assuming it would work.

Please help me find a suitable modem that would work here in US and also work on Ubuntu.

Thanks in advance for the help folks.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
