Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Graphics problem, please assist.

I have a Pine XP 2800 PCI which has the SiS 300/305 GPU and I cant find support for Knoppix or Slackware. The card runs fine with Fedora, and I can only get a shell with Slackware but it would freeze if I tried to "startx" even after running the configuration program. And Knoppix will not start without a "cheatcode" boot parameter
Code:
fb1024x768
or
Code:
knoppix xmodule=vesa
Here is the output from
Code:
lspci ; lspci -n
Code:
knoppix@ttyp1[knoppix]$ lspci ; lspci -n

So basically I can run XF86 with Knoppix but only in framebuffer mode. I am not sure what should be done.

Oh, I forgot to say, I can run Knoppix just fine with the exception of a low bit depth, I can not figure out how to change this, or if it is even possible while running in framebuffer mode. (I'm real tired right now, I should go to sleep...)
