Graphics problem; multiple screens
 
Hello out there :-) I am using opensuse 12.2, with two screens connected. On board a vga adapter and a graphics card with two dvi connectors.
Of course I want to use both screens but apparently only the on board vga connector gets an output signal.
With 'xrandr -q' I get only a listing of vga-1? The dvi outputs are not listed?
A few weeks ago I could see an output on both the dvi outputs and then I did not saw the vga output.
Apparently the vga is enabled and the dvi both disabled. How can I switch this the other way around?
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Hope someone can help me with this, thanks in advance!
I am almost sure that is is't a driver problem. The driver I use is nouveau.

Hi, what card is it? Is it on a laptop? You mention xrandr, could you post the output?
AFAIK nvidia graphics can only output to two devices at a time, and only certain combinations of outputs are supported.
A bad solution : have you tried it with the binary blob?

If it was working with both the onboard + the card before then you dont need to disable the onbaord video. I would and use a DVI-> VGA adapter...because the onbaord 7050/7100 video will use main system RAM and I/Os, the video card wont.

But you dont seem to have a 2nd video listed in your lspci output. Either you've changed a BIOS settting, or the card has died, or it has moved out of the slot slightly. Try taking the case off and pushing the video card it.

The onboard + the card didn't work on the same time! So I would like to disable the onboard video. But when I do that I have no monitor at all. I will also check if the card is still in its slot. I hope the card didn't die :-( Using the onboard the graphics is poor and sometimes the system freezes.
So further info would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes you can use onboard video + a card, sometimes you cant. To know you'll either have to check the manual or the BIOS.

I have checked the card; its well situated in the slot. I don't know how to check whether its working?
I also checked the BIOS. Can't find anything concerning disabling or enabling the graphics card. I never tried to earlier so the settings are still the same at time that the card was working...
Can you show me what the card in the lspci listing looks like?

Hi,

I'm at a loss : I don't understand your setup. Your lspci output mentions only one VGA card, yet you keep on talking about an integrated and a dedicated GPU. Do you have 2 GPUs? If yes, disabling the integrated one and using only the dedicated GPU should work (at least it should be easier to set up).
I have (quickly) googled your card, and am none the wiser.
Now, if you want to use both GPUs, there is a solution, but it involves manually writing a xorg.conf. Configure 2 separate X screens, one on each GPU, and position them one next to the other.

So the cls lspci should always list a graphics card? Then I am afraid that the card died?

In your lspci output there is mentioned only one GPU. hence my confusion.
If my understanding is correct, you'll either have to disable the integrated GPU in the BIOS, and/or write a xorg.conf that specifies which GPU to use for wich screen. In the BIOS, try looking for a setting along the lines of "primary display adapter", set it to PCIe (should be something like that; changes from board to board).

By no means does any of this imply that your GPU is dead!

I am truly sorry if I'm spreading my confusion to others.

Thanks for your reply! Your reply confirms my findings so far. Now I am convinced(?) that it should be something with the BIOS settings. Because a week ago the output of xrandr -q and lspci did show the graphics card and didn't show the onboard vga. The strange thing is that I did not change my BIOS settings before my graphics 'disappeared'.
I tried to change the BIOS (MSI N1996 motherboard) but so far no good. In 'Integrated peripherals' I could not find a setting to disable the onboard.
So any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance, regards Ed

If the BIOS has reset itself for any reason (e.g. a bad battery) the BIOS normally resets itself to factory defualts. If the factory defualt is 'init onboard 1st' the video card could be simply ignored.

'MSI N1996' isnt the motherboard model, that is stamped onto most of the MSI boards I've seen. You should be able to get the exact motherboard model from lshw (as su).

If you post the exact motherboard model somebody should be able to tell you where in the BIOS the onboard video settings are.

MSI MS-7366 isnt really the model either, its an internal MSI numbering scheme. So searching for that at the MSI site will get you various motherboards.....

Anyway with that series the onboard video settings should be in 'PnP/PCI Configurations'.

I have put PCI-E as standard in 'PnP/PCI Configurations'; doesn't help :-( My graphics card still not recognized (not visible with lspci).
