graphical system

I'm new to linux, as in don't know squat, pretty much know all of windows and wanted a new toy to mess with....i didn't realize what i was getting into....i have a seperate 60GB HD on my system its a athlon xp 2100+ with a nvidia GeForce4 Ti4400 and a Samsung Syncmaster 760VTFT flat pannel monitor. Basically when i try to run the graphical mode it craps out. Says stuff about a device not being installed when i try to test settings in the configuration window. Is it a driver problem or hardware? I really have no clue since i'm really new to linux. If its a driver problem i need to know what files to download and how to install them....linux isn't any fun when i have to do everything in text mode.
I would appreciate any help
Thanks,
Matt
