Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

GPU Overclocking - How Much?

I want to overclock my graphics card. It's an XFX GeForce FX 5500 with 256 MB RAM. I was wondering, though, what's the "safe zone" percentage for GPU overclocking? I don't want to fry it, but I do want to get some better framerates out of it.

Also, the nVidia driver's overclocking tool allows you to set two different clock speeds - one for running 3D stuff and one for running 2D stuff. Does it hurt the chip if I have the 2D speed a whole lot lower than the 3D speed (to help keep it from overheating)? It seems to me like this would be a good thing, but I want to make sure that dropping more than 70 mHz or so doesn't hurt anything.
