Currenty I am playing NMS using the integrated GPU but can only play using GEForce NOW. I play for an hour at a time free and would need some £89 for a years subscription to 6 hour sessions.

The alternative is to buy a dedicated GPU now when the price is apparently high. Now knowing anything about GPU's and whether they would be compatible with Linux is a problem for me.

I am asking for advice on buying a card which would not 'just' support NMS, but a little more. (No idea what as I am not normally a gamer) One I could be confident would work 'out of the box' in my setup.

Big ask I know, but I am hopeful

No Man's Sky minimum GPU spec. suggestions from research:

GeForce GTX 480 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 285 2GB

The only one I have found a price for is the MSI NVIDIA GTX 980 4 GB

PCI Express 256 Bit Gaming Graphics Card

Processor: Intel Core i3 2.9 GHz.
RAM Memory: 8 GB.
Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 480.
HDD Disk Space: 16 GB.
Graphics Card Memory: 2 GB.

Nearly all GPUs are compatible with Linux
  • Intel Gpu drivers are handy to get, but intel GPUs suck.
  • AMD do proprietary and closed source drivers depending on your card
  • Nvidia are the best, but pricey.

What is your built-in GPU? If £89 per annum is an issue for you (and we've all been there) what's your budget for a GPU card? If it's low, you might do better second hand than new.

Thank you for taking time out to reply.

The processor has UHD Graphics 750 integrated graphics.

I think on or about £1000. However if someone were to say, that it is likely to buy a much better card in 12 months then I could pay the £89 and wait.

However, I would also need to consider, would I really need a better card later as I am not a 'gamer' just someone who now has time to play the odd game. What would the advantages be of a 'better' card? The saved £89 would go towards a new card.

I just need card suggestions to find the current cost to help me to decide. The main factor is not cost, it is more to do with easy driver availability for the particular card.

I would not buy second hand.

Intel UHD Graphics 750 is one of the better Intel GPUs, but beside AMD or Nvidia they still suck.

If you say you're not a gamer, is that UHD 750 good enough for you? If so, use it.

http://phoronix.com provide video card reviews, and search engines will provide card comparisons. I can't really recommend anything (I'm sure others will), but you might do well looking at secondhand, where gamer enthusiasts have spoiled themselves with the latest card, and are getting rid of their second hand gamer card. Ebay might be the place to start looking, and I'd suggest under £500 as a budget.

Thank you for the link.

I am actually using the integrated GPU.

No, it is not good enough for me as I will either have to suffer streaming 1 hour free sessions or pay £89 and suffer 6 hour sessions streaming until I get a dedicated GPU card. I just need to know when and what to buy, now or later, dependant on what I think is a reasonable and affordable cost.

makem,

Graphics card prices are sky high and availability is poor.

You may also need to factor in the cost of a decent monitor.

This AOC model works brilliantly for a games player friend:

This article may help:

A GeForce GTX 1660 Super is one possibility:

Thank you for taking the time to reply. However, I do have everything except the dedicated GPU.

I find it hard to believe Gen11 UHD750 inadequate for a non-gamer. I'd be very happy to have it. I have two PCs with Gen9 HD630 that do everything I need and more. My Gen7 HD4400 isn't too shabby either. Intel Graphics has improved immensely over the past decade.

Intel graphics had a lot of improving to do! I have an admittedly 8 year old HD4000 and it sucks. It is just slightly faster than my last card, an AMD RS690(2007 vintage), which for AMD quickly became about as popular to mention as Tienanmen Square is for China.

Glad to hear they are better though. I'm no gamer, btw, but I do watch videos.

As you will see, I have tried and still am trying to get the one game No Man's Sky working on this GPU via Steam.

I started plaing games only a few months ago and used my XPS13 9300 to stream the game. It was so inconvenient I decided to use a desktop and here I am. I did hope the integrated GPU may be suitable but have really given up as I lack the knowledge to go any further. Hence this thread.

Result of installing the drivers:

stat: cannot stat '/dev/dri/render*': No such file or directory - error

I posted an issue and have not had any feedback.

Are you running some linux steam compile, or using wine to play NMS?

As this list suggests, there are quite some pieces to the Intel Graphics on Linux puzzle.

IMO, if you need the most competent help, consider giving a try of the developers themselves where they hang out:Just don't be surprised if you get ignored, which is typical when a particular problem and its solution they consider readily discoverable elsewhere. But, they do want to know about novel problems. If it's something new, they'll point you to https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documen...ow-report-bugs.

Don't think that paying money will help to solve configurations problems. The may will appear as well with your new planned dedicated gpu. If you want to play without bothering yourself - play on Windows. If you want play on Linux - expect some inconveniences. Particularly you build your box by yourself. You can't expect Linux to support brand new hardware.

I always expect problems if I don't research before buying. In this case the Unit was on the compatible list.
