got me a IBM 51X
 

my brother picked up and gave me a server box(rack).
IBM 51X

it has 6 hard drive bays up front ( Hot-swap Hard Disk Drives ).
it's missing the drives and the carrier for the drives.

well i'm not familiar with the 'Hot swap..' hardware, and would need this carrier thingy(s).
so what are these carrier thingies called so i can google and maybe pick something up.

i seen hot swap drives for big $$, nad would have no need to use this feature, but would rather have a normal ide or scsi if i could.

IBM is the starting place for any IBM stuff. All the fru numbers can be found on the manuals online. Then search for the fru numbers at service and second hand places. I suspect that this is scsi and with the correct cable and drive you could get any scsi to work. It should have and ide adapter too in it.

yep, its scsi. i did some digging around, and see something called the 'Planar shuttle and arm.
the planar cable is plugged to the internal scsi.

so it looks like i need to purchase a couple a scsi drives.
and look up what i need to get them plugged in .

what i need are hot swap drive trays.

To do it right sure. If you want you can duct tape one on the side even or let it rest in the slot.

now that my friend IS how to be true FOSS compliant. hehehe .

to OP: hey for some GREAT deals on some scsi drives ( refurbs) check out consumerdepot.com i buy my stuff from them. the scsi drives are good as i have been to the store ( distrobution and retail located in my area) and they are nice drives.
for getting a freebie you scored dude.

Hehehe. mrmnemo I have used RTV silicone in the Navy to keep stuff where it should stay. Seems to work just enough but lets you remove it when needed.

I agree that all that stuff is on the second source lists. I used to see great deals on Overstock.com even.

EDIT: thats newer slot type looking connector. also sice its rack mount you can always use one of those old refrigerators that way you can have cold swapable sodas!!! ok...i will stop being stupid and just revert to plain old intellectually stagnant 8>>
