Any brand and model but stay away from ATI and INTEL graphics. Also stay away from SIS and ATI chipsets. Try to find notebooks with nVidia mobile graphics and either VIA or INTEL chipsets.

As the owner of an IBM T40, I'd endorse them wholeheartedly. -- J.W.

If you don't want to do it yourself, or just want to get a good idea of what laptops work well with linux, check out:
http://www.emperorlinux.com/ They sell name-brand laptops with linux preinstalled on them. I haven't purchased anything from them, but I used to work in the same building with them, and they seemed like a bunch of nice guys who know their stuff. |
btw, don't get a comaq, at least not an old one. they have tons of issues with power supply and weird things like having you make a partition just to be able to change settings in the bios. like many people said above, i hear ibm is good.

This is good advice keep it coming. ;)
I researching into those options. I'd like to throw Apple into the equation. To make life awkward :D .. Whats a PPC solution like? |
Well, SUSE has a PPC release. And Yellow Dog Linux is PPC specific. From what I've heard YDL is great, but I don't have any first hand experiance with it.
BTW I have a Toshiba Portege 3480CT that I use on a nearly daily basis running FreeBSD with Fluxbox. It's kind of old, but it's small and light, and has enough horsepower to do everything I've needed it for so far. |
I would recommend my Sager anyday works flawless .

I have had good luck with Toshiba brand laptops.
As was said, you don't want to try a Compaq or an ATI/Intel graphics solution.... |
t41 drivers for mandrake 10.1
Hello all, I saw a couple of posts from t41 owners... and I have a question for them:
I too am driving the t41, and I am having trouble with the graphics card... I am installing mandrake 10 under VMware and I am not able to configure the drivers/vendors... any suggestions? It seems more difficult that it should be and therefore... I think I must not be seeing the obvious... Please and thanks, truck |
