Good Distro For Installation To 160GB Seagate External Usb Hd?
 

Hi,

What Would Be A Good Distro For Installation To A Seagate 160GB External Usb Hd? Prefferably Automatically Setting Up Initrd, Etc.
My Drive Has A 120GB Fat32 Partition & 40GB Of Free Space. My Bios Supports Usb Hd Booting, Tried Ubuntu But Even With Instructions Always Produces Grub Error Code 29 After The Command "savedefault". Really Annoyed. Downloading Suse 10.1. Any Better Ideas? My Internal Hd Is Full & My Ext. Hd Won't Be Moving Often.

Any of them. Which distro to install is not a matter of hardware, but of personal comfort with the interface.

When I Installed Ubuntu Onto This Drive [With Instructions, Creating Seperate Initrd With Usb Modules, Under Livecd] Whenever I Try To Boot It, It Always Has A Problem With The Grub Command "savedefault" Generating A Disk Write Error. Code 29 I Believe. Any Ideas On Why That Is Happening As It Installs Fine & Windows Can Write To The Fat32 Partition [& The ext3 Partitions With Paragon Rescue Kit 4.0's Help].

Problem with my Seagate 320 gig
 

My Seagate 320 usb external hard drive will not consisently mount, and it will only give me read privileges.
I have tried ntfs-3g and helps sometimes, except when it corrupts my Windows XP partition.
I am using PCLinuxOS 2007, go into PCC boot tab, mount it there, works sometimes, but will not hold on a reboot. Similar problems with thumbdrive.
Hardrive is formatted as NTFS (for sake of Windows XP), and thumbdrive is vfat.
Any suggestions?

The choice of distros is mainly one of personal choice. I do have one suggestion however. You may want to download Suse 10.2 rather than 10.1. 10.2 is the current version, and may work better for you depending on how new your hardware is.

Do a search on this site and throughout the entire universe of Unixdom and you will find many instances of folks with similar problems with external USBs. Is this is a problem the kernel people need to look into?

My Seagate Has Never Given Me ANY Problems Whatsoever Relating To It Being Not Found. I Installed OpenSUSE 10.2 On My Internal HD And I Can Play Music Files, View Pictures & Videos Without Any Problems. Nothing Extraordinary, Default Configuration In FAT32. It Is Connected Via USB 2.0 To A Via Motherboard.
