For a printer, visit LinuxPrinting.
This site has a list of all the printers supported by linux, and some recommended ones. (Make sure that you select a printer that "Works Perfectly")

I use an Epson C41UX printer with no problems.

For a scanner, visit the SANE page - here. You should be able to find a supported scanner that meets your needs

In terms of what brand, I think it is best to make a decision based on if the model is supported or not.

I hope this helps
