Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Gobi 2000 loading problems

Hello!
A few weeks ago I purchased a HP elitebook 2540p.
One of the features I like the most was the integrated 3G modem.
I installed ubuntu, 11.04 wich now is upgraded to 11.10 without any luck to get the modem working.
Reading up on it, I noticed that using gobi_loader and loading firmware into it would make it work and for a day or so I actually did see it using lsusb. During that time I were not able to use the modem tho, but atleast it existed.
So my main problem is that I cant see the device using lsusb.
Is there anyway to "force" this hardware into appearing on lsusb?
I've read that booting into windows and then back into linux would resolve the issue but that not my case. The card works perfectly in windows using hp connection manager but as soon as I boot into linux its just gone.

Are there any tricks here to power it up during kernel loading?

THanks in advanced
