Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H
Have any of you tried the Gigabyte Mobo GA-MA790GP-DS4H, specifically with Debian/Ubuntu. What results did you get with this card when playing back DVDs, and what video mode were you using? (1080i? 1080p? something else?)
Any comments or advice gratefully received, I'm about to buy one of these for a general purpose/Media Centre server, to run 24/7 and replace my Digiboxes, my dvd player and vcr, my stereo, radio, etc, etc, unless anyone can tell me there is something better at the price (just over £100) Oh and while you're thinking along these lines, what about the ASUS M3N-HT Deluxe/HDMI...same questions as above |
Hi. I think the first thing you should consider is if the kernel supports the chipsets used.
See my tag for hardware details. I have had this system for 6 weeks and it took quite a while to sort out who used what. There is a definite conflict with the names of the asus chipset. It uses a 730a MCP78 chipset, and still now it identifies it as a gf8200, which is a graphics card. A variation of this board has integrated graphics, a gf8200 (sli capable). Mine does not. My Gigabyte graphics pci-express x16 v2.0 is registered as an asus and was fubar for a while. 0605 does not exist yet in the pciid database. Identification I for one am glad you are researching first. BTW, I am using the nVidia .run package for graphics (770.80). I have a feeling nVidia are too busy cleaning up after the HP laptop failures to pay attention to small time buyers. Good luck, Glenn ps, It is a similar situation in m$win on my system (dual boot), I can't get any bios info from the graphics card and there are no update for the mobo (asus) or the 3d graphics (gigabyte). some specs I have correlated...(graphics) Code:

one of the motherboards in this test is the Gigabyte you are looking at, running Debian Testing.

My Choice...
OK, after much hair tearing, research and volumes of Java (the wet sort, not the code!), I think I'm going to go with the Abit AN78GS
That may seem odd, after I had asked about the other cards, but I just heard about this one, and in a matter of a few minutes, it seemed to tick all the boxes. Warnings and caveats would be welcome...stop me before I do something stupid, I'm too stupid to stop myself :) Cheers |
