getting realtek alc850 work with 5.1 sound system

Hello,
I got a Realtek ALC850 chip on my Asus A8V Deluxe mainboard and now I want to use a 5.1 sound system with it. Stereo output on the front speaker works fine, but no sound out of the other ones...

What shall I do? Has someone an answer?

thx bergwiesel

Using ALSA? If so try speaker-test -c6 -Dsurround51:0 to test the speakers for proper connection. Then run the alsamixer as your user and unmute and raise the volumes on the Surround, Center and LFE channels then unmute the Duplicate Front channel.

thx at least I know now that it's working...
But with unmute Duplicate Front channel it simply copy the stereo from the front to the rear speackers, right?

Does someone know a prog or tool so I can listen my mp3s in 5.1 or at least that under ~120Hz everything goes to the subwoofer...

thx bergwiesel

I think that is all the driver will do is duplicate the channels I know if I plug it in to my Audigy I get the separate channels but then I lose the input from my TV card .... I not sure on a program I believe the speakers themselves should take care of that at least mine send the base to the subwoofer.

4 or 5.1 output is possible with Alsa.
I followed following howto and got it works pretty fine :)
We can have Can I play stereo files over all speakers of my 4.0, 5.1 or 7.1 surround-sound setup?

Yes, you need to edit your .asoundrc file for this to work.
