Get an external serial port modem - it is not guranteed it is hardware modem but the bets are very high it is, so if it is - 100% guranteed to work under linux. But it can cost you around $100 or more, this is the only drawback

I know that external USB modems are often software modems (mine was), but I thought that external serial modems were definitely hardware modems?

The Lucent chipset is *really* well supported at linmodem.org, so if you don't want to buy a hardware modem, which is guaranteed to work, pick up a Lucent-based Winmodem, which will probably work.

How to tell the difference between a hardware and software modem:

1. If it costs $19.95, it's a Winmodem.

2. If the hardware requirements exceed '486DX,' it's a Winmodem.

U.S.Robotics all the way :-) they have both external serial modems or the slightly cheaper U.S.Robotics PCI modems, either will work

I've never had any problems with U.S. Robotics. They're a little pricey but it's worth it, especially if that's the only way you can connect to the internet!

well first recognize the chipset of your modem .
may be it is already supported in linux. otherwise buy any hardware modem or PCI. in PCI you can choose any conexant modem or any modem which is based on conexant chipset.
conexant modems are cheap and and have a lot of drivers for linux.
