getting a mic to work in linux

i have a compaq presario mv500 color monitor, wiht a mic built in at the top, and speakers on the sides.
i dont have the manual, but ive got original cables.

ive got an above average sound card, but not the greatest.
it got 6 channel support, (a pci card).

i hope this is all the info needed.
thanks in advance.

Hope this helps:

If u are sure that the cables are connected to the soundcard mic socket, then getting ur sound to work is no big deal.
I use alsa and running alsaconf as root configured the card.
Then i installed a software Audacity to record sound (it worked like a charm)
I have a creative sb 4.1 digital (ensonique chipset) soundcard.

Audacity:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

also u will need wxwindows for audacity
