Getting 4speakers to work/Nforce2/Suse9.1

Hello,

I've just installed my first Linux distribution "Suse 9.1" and I've been pretty happy with it so far, except that I cant get all my speakers to work... (4 satellites + 1 subwoofer). Everything was working perfectly under WinXP, so Im guessing it's a driver problem...
After having pulled half of my hair off, I followed some instructions about how to install my Audio Card using ALSA... The program detected the audio card and installed it... I finally ran "Alsamixer" and activated everything "LFE, Surround etc."... but I still cant hear a damn thing coming from 2 of my speakers + the subwoofer...

Anybody knows how to fix this please?

Welcome to LQ. What audio card (make and model) are you using? Based on your description, if your card is being detected, and you ran alsamixer and have confirmed that the volume settings are turned up, then those are all positive signs.

Factors that could be holding you up:

1. The module needed to support your audio card is not loaded. What is the output from running the "lsmod" command (as root)?

2. You have a permissions problem, possibly on /dev/dsp or /dev/mixer. Are any error messages being displayed when you start things up, and what are the permissions on them now? If they aren't 666 (aka rw-rw-rw-) then "chmod 666 /dev/dsp" and also for /dev/mixer

3. You've got a "kick yourself" problem: are the speakers powered on, is the volume turned up, is the cable plugged into the right output jack on the audio card, is the CD tray still open, etc.

Good luck with it -- J.W.

i have a similar problem. i also have a motherboard with an nForce2 chipset (Abit NF7-S) using the alsa intel8x0 alsa module to drive the sound. I have the problem that no amount of tinkering with mixer settings gets me anything out of the optical digital audio output (everthing else seems to work). Is the problem that this chipset is only partially supported so far or what?

Mine was a "kick urself" problem.

My solution was to click on KAMix (was default for me in 9.1) and push everything up, also click on the other tabs and check that the correct sliders have also been pushed up (cd etc)

(Oh, and running SB Live! 5.1)
