Gettin my sound to work

I guess this is a more general question than a specific hardware problem. I am fairly new to Linux and have been trying to get a VIA VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller to work. I searched on the net and found that I could recompile the kernel with ALSA and via82xx as modules. I did this succesfully but got lost with how to go about loading the modules. I read throught the ALSA and Kernel Module howto's but am still confused. I was able to find snd-via82xx.ko in /lib/modules/2.6.5.042004/kernel/sound/pci. However, the howto reffered to loading modules with the extension .o and not .ko. How do I know if it is the correct module. Also, modprobe results in "modprobe: Can't locate module snd-via82xx" even when i am in the same path as the .ko file.

I found a useful link
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...module=via82xx

However, it didnt touch upon ALSA as being compiled as a module during compilation. Would the same step apply for this?

If anyone can drop some advice or point me in the right direction, it will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Hope you will have chance, same sound chip as yours but never get ALSA working properly !! ( you will probably found more about my troubles seeking for " bibilit ", "sound" or "via82xx" on this site )

However, i solved my troubles editing modules , but mainly using OSS instead of ALSA !!

The problem was solved quite easily with OSS.

I tried so many times to get ALSA working i lost count !!

Let me help clarify things abit

.o kernel modules are for kernels 2.4 and older

.ko kernel modules are for kernels 2.6 and newer..

If you a linux noob, You shouldn't be using kernel 2.6. It is still in beta testing.

ALSA blows donkeys with the via chip...(not alsa's fault mind you.)

OSS is by far the better choice.

Perhaps provide a bit more info about what distro you are running etc..

Gary
