get sound working on dell desktop, FC 3

I've been trying for awhile to get sound working. I'm probably missing something pretty dumb, but at this point I have no idea. So I apologize in advance.

I have a Dell optiplex 4550. The output of lspci is at the bottom. The computer comes with the sound chipset on the motherboard
(Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller). I checked the ALSA page, and although this isn't listed under "intel" I believe I'm looking at the right chip when I look under analog devices at the group AD1881, AD1881A, AD1885, AD1886, AD1887, AD1980, AD1981A, AD1981B, AD1985
(from the ALSA webpage)

When I couldn't get the above working, I added another soundcard:
Aureal Semiconductor Vortex 1 (rev 02)

Still no dice.

Sound is enabled in the kernel as a module. modinfo soundcore yields:
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1381_FC3/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko
description: Core sound module
author: Alan Cox
license: GPL
alias: char-major-14-*
vermagic: 2.6.12-1.1381_FC3 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-3.4
depends:
srcversion: E11490DC3F523551C4C2A6D

I'm running unmodified Fedora Core 3 kernel: 2.6.12-1.1381_FC3
As far as I can tell, everything is uptodate.

I've tried fedora core 4, the sound card didn't work under that either.

I've checked the volume level of the mixer, both with GUI tools, and with the command line (amixer).

Thanks in advance for your help.

additional info

I have an additional soundcard I could try. Should I just do that?
