I just bought a new pair of genius speakers. They plug into a usb port. The pilot light shows that they are switched on. The controls on them do adjust the volume up and down but only as the sound comes thru the laptop speakers.
Im using a T410 ThinkPad with Salix14 as the OS.
I punched in alsamixer on the terminal but there is only one bar to adjust up and down but it doesnt seem to help.
alsaconf produces a 'command not found'.
Is this something that should work 'out of the box'or does it need to be set up?
Another question is;
Are these USB driven speakers? i.e: do they use there own, integrated sound card? Or are they merely USB powered speakers that also plug into the computer's existing sound card?
I ask this because every set of "USB speakers" I've ever come across use the USB plug for power only and draw the signal from the audio output jack.
Pulseaudio will screw you every time. Install pavucontrol and search through it for your devices. It can be tricky to get all the settings correct so that you actually get sound.
