GeForce4 + SiSchipset = NO 3D IN LINUX!

I've a GeForce4 on a MSI mo/bo with SiS 645 & SiS961 chipsets.

I've never managed to get 3d agp graphics working, I'm just stuck with the nv driver and 2d since fébruary.

i've tried all the nvidia drivers back to last years' releases and all I get is the same grey screen and CRASH, reset button!

I think it's reasonable to confirm that this setup is allergic to 3d graphics in linux. Anyone want to prove me wrong? Let me know!

well you maybe have to take additional steps to get it working....not everyone has the luxary of typing sh NVIDIA-x.x.run and bam having their 3d graphics working...
like for instance, maybe you have to look into your /var/log/xfree86.0.log file and look at the errors it is specifically making and go from there to fix it, or maybe the driver isn't loading properly after installing which in turn you might have to try modprobe nvidia and then typing startx to see if that was the issue, or maybe the entry isn't being put in your /etc/modules.conf file for the nvidia module...or even you could have incorrect entries in your bios where you in turn should have assign irq to vga enabled, and pnp os aware disabled...
there is numerous possiblilites on why it isn't working, your just going to have to trouble shoot it, and start off maybe by posting the errors that are in the log file i mentioned above, or double checking you have your xf86config file setup properly ..

It could be the sis chipset. I bought an fx5200 for an ecs MB with the sis746/963. With win98(FE) - pardon the blasphemy- it wouldn't run D3D at all (OpenGL worked ok). D3D did run with winXP.
I used to have an SiS vid card and the drivers were always buggy as heck. So my guess would definetly be the chipset.

Thanks for the comments guys. Believe me, I've tried everything I've found in web forums; config parameters etc but nothing has ever worked, and this since I bought the mo/bo in february. As for bios settings, the two mentionned do not even exist in my bios setup.

I've checked out etc/modules.conf and there is a line "alias = dev/nvidia" or something similar.
But in dev there is no "nvidia"... has the installation crapped up? How to fix it?
