hey, that gf4mx is a goner. so is that ali agp chipset. now i'm playing with my GF6800 128Mb on an Athlon xp2200. i think that my old mobo chipset was just too buggy and there simply wasnt decent drivers for it in linux. and maybe that badness carried onto my pci card aswell. that gf4 had a rather short usage lifetime, ... (its gathering dust next to my gf2 & that old mobo ).

now... if only doom3 ran a bit faster... and why does 2.6.x run slower than 2.4.x...

If you want to give them a home, I'll take 'em! ;^)

How about hdparm? Is it enabled for your chipset? Issue "hdparm [device]"
and see what you've got. I know with 2.6.7 I compiled it without the proper
support for my mobo, and neither IDE, SATA, nor ROM drives had hdparm
turned on. My DVDs lost too many framerates, with a Athlon XP 2600+ and
1 GB of DDR333.

i tried to deliver the gfx card and mobo but, unfortunately, you were'nt in. and i won't be going near 25"04'N 102"41' E again for a while probably. it all depends on the migration of the cariboo.

here's my hdparm info, nothing looks too bad, the geometry's slightly different and that readahead thing's different. i just think that bacause all the system was compiled against the 2.4.26 kernel, 2.6.x doesnt have much affect. and compared to 2.4.x, 2.6.x kernel are a few hundred K bigger. i dont fancy recompiling X myself.

from within 2426 kernel system i get;

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 8 (on)
geometry = 14593/255/63, sectors = 20044080, start = 0

/dev/hdb:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 8 (on)
geometry = 14593/255/63, sectors = 234441648, start = 0

from within 269 kernel system i get;

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 19885/16/63, sectors = 20044080, start = 0

/dev/hdb:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 65535/16/63, sectors = 234441648, start = 0

I'm in southwest China. But I was in all day yesterday :/

I'm no hdparm expert, and it's on for your drives. One thing I
notice that's the same for mine with 2.6.7 I want to check. The
readahead flag is set to 256, and I thought smaller was better:
Quote:
$ man hdparm
Get/set sector count for filesystem read-ahead. This is used to improve performance in sequen_
tial reads of large files, by prefetching additional blocks in anticipation of them being needed
by the running task. In the current kernel version (2.0.10) this has a default setting of 8 sec_
tors (4KB). This value seems good for most purposes, but in a system where most file accesses
are random seeks, a smaller setting might provide better performance. Also, many IDE drives also
have a separate built-in read-ahead function, which alleviates the need for a filesystem read-
ahead in many situations.
The only other thing is are you using a CD while playing those games,
and if so, is hdparm enabled for that device?

i dont have any other programs running with doom3. i even use just fluxbox (or even TWM) to run it. i dont think disk performance is the problem as i even use doom3 with precache so it doesnt use the hd during play (or 'much' anyway). i'm getting by with about 35fps anyway.

but i want more.... MORE MOOOORRRREEEEE!

What I meant was does the game play off a CD in a
CD-ROM or via your hard drive.

But there's the problem - 35 fps

via the hard disk. the funny thing is that the linux version of doom3 doesnt need the CDs in to play them, and it doesnt even need to cd key to play it. crazy. you just copy the files from it. i think i'll try a 'ck' patch as adviced by mkaman in another thread i've got (*). see website;
