GeForce Go 6150 giving me black screen

Hi I'm new to LQ and I'm a total noob to linux.

I have bought a "HP Pavilion dv2000" notebook and tried to run SuSE 10.2 on it, which wasn't too much of a problem, until I tried to get the Nvidia "Geforce Go 6150" chip going.
I already tried several different installation approaches (Nvidia package through YaST, legacy driver, etc.) and I'm really starting to get the wind up.

Last attempt I made seemed to work out, as far as the installation is concerned.
I changed to run level 3 and installed the package I had downloaded from the Nvidia site (I'm not sure it's the right one, "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run", my kernel-module is "Linux 2.6.18.2-34-default i686"):

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run -q

So far so good, but as I then tried to set nvidia as driver for the card with SaX2:

sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia

he told me: no X Server running and that sax will start it's own, which is normal, I guess, but then the screen got black, as if the notebook had switched to standby.
I waited quite a while hoping that SaX was just making some configuration, but to no avail.
When I switched off the computer and rebooted SuSE it sarted with the nv-driver.
I tried to make the above mentioned configuration through SaX again, but with the same result. Don't know if this is important but I'm using KDE 3.5.5 "release 45".

Please could somebody save me from loosing my sanity? :cry:

Download these drivers from from the nvidia download server
ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.2/i586

nvidia-gfx-kmp-default-1.0.9631_2.6.18.2_34-0.1.i586.rpm
x11-video-nvidia-1.0.9631-0.1.i586.rpm

and then try try the manual installation howto on this page

If your monitor is still out of range, open the config file and check if your settings is correctly saved in it, else you have to edit them by hand.


plan B: make a reinstall, don't accept the hardware proposition at the end (this should give you a picture on the screen with framebuffer graphics), setup the network, follow the yast method from the howto above.
