GeForce 9400GT PCI-e x16
I just bought one of these cards today at Best Buy. Cost me about $90. Seems to be a good card - get a lot better frame rates in Sauerbraten and Torcs. However, it has an annoying, tiny whine from the fan. My computer was quiet at idle before.
It has a gig of its own memory, which freed up the shared memory. Vista even improved its score from 3.0 to 4.9 after installing a new driver. I actually run Slackware nearly all the time. Vista gets booted for new hardware and updates only for an occasional game The only thing is some kind of power connector it said must go to the power supply for optimal performance. It said it was a 6 pin, but it only has two. (PCI-ex16) I could find no other place from the power supply or motherboard to plug it in to. Seems to run great otherwise. |
What I use...
I made the whine on my 8600GT go away. http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalo...ath=2_&mID=105 There may be other passive coolers to your liking. You should be able to buy an adapter for one of your PSU connectors to obtain power for your card. Check those voltages before connection. |
A GeForce9 9400 GT with 1 GB of video memory for $90 is not a good buy because you can get the same for half at newegg.com. If the card requires a 6-pin PCIe power connector then it could be a GeForce9 9600 or higher version.

It does not have a 6 pin connector anywhere on the card. Just a 2 pin for tv-hdmi stuff.
While I normally buy online for this type of stuff, my daughter gave me a gift card for Best Buy for my birthday. I was not out of pocket that much. As far as the documentation goes, I reckon it was written to cover 6000 different models, and did not apply to the model I have. |

The new card has absolutely no fan noise at all. :) |
