geforce 4 mx and redhat 8
shell only works. everyone said, geforce 4 has some kind of problem with redhat 8.
i downloaded right drivers and kernel update from nvidia.com and used the rpm -ivh file to install both.
then i tried x again and still it doesn't work. the error x returns me is:
settings in xf86config are: 24bits and resolutions from 640x480 to 1024x768 that i think you need to know.
- VESA(0) No Matching Modes
- Screens found, but none have usable configuration
Fatal server error:
- no screens found
then i tried to edit the xf86config file and moved from 24 bits to 16 and tried to run x.. here i got this error:
- caught signal 11. server aborting
---
everyone said everything should work fine after updating drivers from nvidia... could you please tell me what is the problem now?
-thanks

erk... I don't know about RH8, as I use Debian, but one thing that worked for me was, after installing the NVidia drivers, doing "insmod nvidia.o" in the /lib/modules/(your kernel)/kernel/drivers/video directory (I don't know if it's the same for RH 8). Good luck. You should also change the "Driver=vesa" or "Driver=nv" line in your XF86Config-4 to Driver=nvidia, and comment out or remove:
load "dri"
load "GLcore"
The file you should be editing is XF86Config-4, not XF86Config (unless the former doesn't exist)

Did the nvidia.o module file actually get installed in the /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video directory? I seem to recall having no problem using the rpm for the GLX library but that the rpm installation for the kernel module didn't work. I downloaded the tar archive version and it installed just fine.
