Games still taking gamepad input when unfocused?
ie. the game window will be on another workspace, and if I press a button it'll still register in the game. Is there any way to fix this other than, I guess, wayland which isn't an option for me at the moment?

Fix what? That is not a "broken", that is a "hey, it keeps working"!
The input and the output of the game does not change just because you start looking somewhere else.
Have you tried not touching the controller when you look away?

I think if I were playing a game and my controller quit working just because another app opened on a different workspace SOMETHING would get thrown through a wall! Just sayin'
