FX5200 or MX4000?

Hi! :D

I have been saving some money to buy a video card, but all I can afford right now is a Geforce FX5200 (128MB) or a MX4000 (128MB). Now, I've been reading lots of reviews about these cards and found out that they're only crap. Is this really true for linux users on a budget? I also read that the MX4000 card is slightly better than the FX5200. Please, give me some advice on which one to buy: the FX5200 or the cheaper MX4000. I intend to run cedega-games, like Max Payne 2 and native ones like NWN, UT, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, etc.

Thank you very much in advance.

Can't really vouch for either, but I have an FX5200 256MB in my box(athlon XP 2600+, 512 MB DRR333).

And I get excellent performance out of it on Arch, SUSE, and Slackware...

The MX I have around is my Mom's computer who I maintain, which has a geforce 2 MX400 64MB... it works well for what it is.. but obviously doesn't compare well.

Anything nvidia should give you plenty of performance. My fx5200 was only like $70 at Sam's Club.

:D :D :D Hi!

So your recommendation is to buy the newer FX5200 (only 128MB though)?

The only thing that makes me hesitate on this topic is the fact that the MX4000's GPU core is faster than the FX5000's. And also because of the reviews.

Ok. Thank you very much for the reply :D

Good linuxing!

PS: I hope my english has improved a little bit ;)

Your English seems fine to me :)

I would say that you would be happy with either of them. If you are leaning towards the MX more, get it. I like my FX, but it wasn't really a conscious decision to go with that model. I wanted a better card that was better supported under Linux(I had an ATI All-In-Wonder 128MB) and I found this fx5200 with 256MB... it was cheap, it was nvidia, it was available.. so I bought it. ;)

I'm sure that you will be pleased with either. The decision must be your own. :)

Hehehe! :D

I liked your answer, it was very "Matrixish"! ;)
Ok, I guess I'll investigate a little more, and then buy the MX4000. As I said, the only reason to choose this one is the GPU core frequency.

Thank you very much, halo14 :)
