funny, not mounting

i needed to get stuff off a disk, the kernel source and a driver for a modem. however i am unable to mount the CD-ROM gives "no media" error. ironicly when the system asks for a disk it has no troble reading it. i think it may be the fact it is a very cheap drive, i am gonna get rid of it for another reason. even when the system aks it spits it out a few times before taking it. the worst and cheapest thing i have ever bought. so aviod dynx drives.

stuff you need to know
mandrake linux 10
kernel 2.4.25mdk (downgraded so I could use the modem, no 2.6 compatibility yet)
dynx drive, 52x IDE.

as i said if the system calls for the drive it works. i just cant get it to mount at all. i have played around trying to get it to work. nothing seems to work. personaly i think it is the drive, but i will find out when i install the new one.

Could you show the mount command that you are using to mount the drive? Also could you show the /etc/fstab entry for the CD? Do you use automount?
