Function keys on HP Multimedia Keyboard
 

I have recently purchased a HP Multimedia keyboard. With the help of xbindkeys and some other software I've gotten most of the Multimedia keys working.

But I would like to know how to setup my Function keys. See my keyboard actually does something pretty interesting. I'd really like to make this work if anybody has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

Most multimedia keyboards have an 'f-lock' key. it's like caps-lock, except that it toggles the F-keys between F1-F12 and other random functions.

Try toggling that button to see if it has any effect. (if you have one)

In the first picture the very first lit up key is the F key. It gives no response in linux.

No answers, is nobody up for this challenge?

This is an old thread but common problem.

The first thing you need to do is use the 'xev' application and determine if the keys are in fact working.

The next thing you should do is create and Xmodmap file. Search around and find the information on that and where it's located.

Ubuntu/Debian have quite a bit of support for keybords and function keys so try taking a lot at one of their installs. I remember searching around the filesystem for their Xmodmap file and never found it but I didn't really look that hard either.

Slackware isn't the most user friendly for configuring these sorts of things. But luckily with the newer versions of xorg it doesn't have to be. As most hardware devices are configured automatically so to may your keyboard one day...
