Full duplex on ATI sound card?

I have a laptop with a ATI IXP SB400 sound card. When I use Audacity to record a track everything is fine. When I play back anything, all is well. But when I listen to the first track while I record another one, the new recording is screwed up. It is choppy and lacks treble. When I do the same thing in Windows, everything is fine. I have searched the web extensively, but have not found a solution. Can anyone help? Vesion of my Alsa driver is 1.0.11.

As a new file?

Which distro are you using? Which audacity version?

No, just a new track.

Ubuntu 6.06, and also Dynebolic 2.0. Audacity both 1.3 beta and 1.2. My research has revealed that it might be driver related. Alsa seems to have problems with full duplex on my sound card. Mind you this works great in Windows on the same machine, so I am still able to do the job, but it would of course be nice not having to swich.
