Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Fujitsu Lifebook A1010, won't boot from CDs

I just got this laptop from eBay, and it doesn't have a HDD, so I wanted to try Mepis, as it comes with a live CD.
When I boot, it will just send me to the GRUB prompt, and that's it. That same CD installs fine on other machines.

I tried an Ubuntu 6.06 CD, and it will not even do anything, it just says it's a non bootable CD. I didn't try that CD on other machines though.
The ONLY bootable CD that actually works is a FreeBSD install, which does apear to work, but it's not a LiveCD, and since I don't have a HDD installed I can't do much.

Now, my question is, did anyone run into a simlar problem, where a bootable CD won't boot, or will die on the GRUB prompt?

Thanks for your time.
