Fujitsu FDX310 Modem

I have downloaded eciadsl-usermode-0.8.
However when I invoke "startmodem" I finally get the following message:
"ECI load2: success
synchronisation successful
Connecting modem (4/5)...
niceppd: No such file or directory
failed to connect."

"nice" I discover is to be found in /bin. pppd in /etc/ppp
Does this perhaps mean there is something wrong in the writing of the startmodem command?

Any help with this would be most gratefully received
