fried my sealink hybrid drive: casting about for advice on what to replace it with

Hi folks.
Subject line says it: I want to know what others think about hybrid as compared to standard HDDrives.

I bought this computer with all built 3 years ago and it has run without a hitch till the other day when I interrupted a "erase disk" operation in Parted Magic, which, according to vendor, seems to have killed the hard drive.

My Question: for normal hacking and virtualization (testing various software and teaching myself to hack and code) and normal video use (usually on Mint with VLC but thinking of migrating to either Arch or Vector Linux) does the extra speed and caching characteristics of the hybrid make it worth the bit of extra cash (and, in this case, an extra wait)?

Thanks in advance guys.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

What tools did the vendor use to identify a failed drive?
What diagnostics have you run on the system/drive? You could try a 'LiveCD/DVD like;
Quote:
SystemRescueCd <- 'is a Linux system on a bootable CD-ROM for repairing your system and recovering your data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk. It contains a lot of system utilities (parted, partimage, fstools, ...) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools).' + 'Online-Manual
You can also look at Tools, Recovery, Diagnostic, Emergency section of Slackware®-Links for other tools that may help you.

As to replacement of the drive, why not select a 'SSD'?
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

Thanks for the tip.
I did exactly that today; well worth the extra few $$: i'm strapped in and enjoying the extra acceleration. :-)
