Force DVD-R on +R burner possible?

I've read lots on this topic and found nothing too useful. Is there no way to force a +RW burner to burn -RW as well? There just has to be.

I'm pretty sure they're physically different enough that this is not possible. At least I've never heard of it being done.

Yes it is possible. You need to find firmware to reprogram the drive to write to a DVD-RW disc. Ask the manufacture if they have such firmware for your model of DVD recordable drive. If they do not, you are stuck using DVD+RW. This is not bad but you will then have limited selection of disc brands if your DVD player has a hard time reading them.
