I have a cable modem that feeds into a linksys cablemodem/dsl router. Basically, I just setup port forwarding (or so I thought) to forward ftp ports to port 21. I tried it on this machine (xp) and also my linux machine, but when people ftp in, they get a socket error, is there some sort of configuration file im missing or a piece that I didnt get right?
Originally posted by strago I did that, the person who tries to connect from the outside can, but it cant get a socket or something so it wont list whats there
Do you have the appropriate service running on the linux box?
Is the Cable Company blocking incoming requests on port 21? They tend not to allow servers of any type. I know here (verizon) they block 21, 80, 8080 etc. to keep you from running services and acting as a proxy.
Set your ftp server on a different port and reconfigure the router and give it a whirl

So I think it has to deal with an issue about the 40793 port, but i have no idea how to handle that
Ok a couple of dumb questions. Have you tried ftping into the box yourself (within your network)? And have you checked the configuration of vxFTPd..... I"m not that familiar with it.
