Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Fn key questions

hi,
I am planning on buying a notebook (in USA) with a full 102 keyboard (meaning with a *real* numeric keypad)

I find that just about every brand/model of notebook with that type of keyboard has the Fn key in the lower-left corner.

I am very much used to having the Left-Ctrl key in that corner....

So, is there a way under linux (particularly RH 9.0) to swap the Fn and Left-Ctrl keys ?

Also, is there any brand/model that comes with the layout I wish ?

thanks for any pointers ! - koyllana

I have a Fn key also. It replace the Ctrl button and it is hard for me to play some games and use shortcut key. I can't help you. But I hope someone can help to solve this problem too!

Generally the Fn key does not have a scancode, so it cannot be re-assigned under an OS. It is usually used for system specific functions - Fn+F5 on some laptops swaps the video output from the screen to the vga-out. I understand how annoying it can be - I recently bought myself a wireless keyboard and it has an Fn key which is used to change the repeat rates - it's right beneath the Enter key, next to the Shift key, and it is annoying.

<edit>
On the chance that your Fn key might have a scancode, you can use the app xev (should be part of your X setup) to check the codes.
