We have bought a Flash Drive.
In the windows 98 it worked perfectly. But in our Linux (kernel 2.4.18) we didnt't get to install it. We would like you could inform us step by step all the procedure to the Flash Drive installation in the Linux We also would like to know if Flash Drive can be connected/disconnected when the PC is turned on. If this is a USB flash device, you can probably get the kernel to recognize it with the following:
modprobe usbcore modprobe uhci modprobe usb-storage Then check "dmesg" to see if the device was registered. It will be registered as a SCSI device, yeah, no kidding, everything is basically emulated as SCSI device. The chain read should look like: scsi1 : sym53c8xx-1.7.3c-20010512 Vendor: SONY Model: CD-R CDU948S Rev: 1.0h Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Except not a CDROM of course.... The Device should be mountable as /dev/sda1 assuming you have no SCSI hard drives in your machine. I don't know how automounter deals with these things so the device is going to be hotpluggable in that you have to unmount and remount the device before and after you pull it. Of course, this all depends on whether your device is supported yet, which it may be, but under 2.4.19. If the above doesn't work, check back. Cheers, Finegan |

Please, maybe you can help... I have an USB flash pen mass storage disk. An USB flash disk. It works perfectly in MAC OS X 10.2 and in Windows 2000 without any configuration. I think my problem is only how to install it to Linux Redhat 9.0. I tried this $ modprobe but it says:bash: modprobe, commond not found, ??? It is handled as typical harddisk in Linux. Linux can find it, but I dont know how to mount it neither how to configure Linux to accept this device. It *should* work according to manual. Furthermore it should be totally platform independent device, as generally accepted like floppy disk is in general. Furtheromore there may be a conflict with cdwriter which is another fake scsi device in Linux. and logfile for you... The device works...but gives these alarms. I dont know if it is trustable. I will test these...
But this logfile which I gave is precisely the result of the dmesg. I just didnt use all of your flags. It is recognized as scsi device and I have transfared files in to my new flash disk. In general it seems to work...but should I still change it, maybe its broken, but only a little bit? -Tommi |
To be able to help you, I need to see the output of the commands I posted. I am interested in seeing how your USB setup is configured, but I need the output of those commands to do that. Your previous post didn't help me get that sort of info.

I have a similar USB2 Flash Drive Problem
I have a similar problem with a Sony MicroVault 128MB Flash Drive USB2 device. I am trying to use it with SUSE 8.2 that handles USB2 in theory...
If I connect it to the computer, after a few seconds an icon appears on the desktop, as if it were a normal hard disk. When I click on it I get an unknown filesystem error. I have tried formatting it as FAT, FAT32 and NTFS from within Windows 2000 but always get the same error. I was looking for a message about the hardware detection of the USB host controller on bootup and what IRQ was assigned, but your output doesn't make any mention of IRQs. I was looking for IRQs above 16, which can cause problems with how a device works under Linux. However, everything seems to be in order; although it seems that your CD burner is connected as a scsi device (as /dev/sr0 - this is normal practice) but /dev/scsi is empty (Suse must do things differently).
Your Flash Drive appears to be /dev/cdu535. As I read the permissions, it is readable and writable by root, but only readable by the group 'disk'. It should also be writable by group 'disk' as per the entries for /dev/cdouble0 and /dev/cdouble1. I would try changing the permissions to be the same as your CD drives by typing the command (as root): chmod 660 /dev/cdu535 and see if that improves things. I gather you are going to use this device to swap files between Windows and Linux, so I would avoid filetypes FAT and NTFS and use FAT32 (vfat in Linux). Avoid FAT because it is much less efficient in using storage space, and avoid NTFS because writing to NTFS in Linux is 'experimental' at the moment, so not to be trusted. If you have an entry under /mnt for your flash drive, then see if it works under that after running the chmod command. <edit> typo in chmod command. |
