flash stick -general usb problem


hey

Everything use to work all right. When i p;uuged any usb device
it was recognized automatically.(i-pod,usb external hard drive,usb stick)
But now for some reason nothing happens when i plug them in.

I tried to find something by googling but.. I see that the system sees the devices because when i put inthe terminal
>dmesg

i get these for my usb stick:

usb 5-7: USB disconnect, address 7

application mplayer uses obsolete OSS audio interface




--so why doesnt it mount them automatically??? i also tried to mount them
manuallly but i failed. I think its because i cannot really understand the way you mount something.. the command i tried was accordin to the previous system msgs:

mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/flash

But it wouldn't recognize the device.

if you unplug a mounted USB storage item it can cause problems, always umount them first, you could kill udev, hal & messagebus and restart those services, or just reboot and try again...

I didn't see where you said which distro you were using ,but I had a similar problem when I upgraded from openSuSE 10.2 to 10.3 beta. Check out the link and see if it might help. HOWEVER if you're not using openSuSE, I would recommend that you do a search for your specific distro.

This is the search I used replace suse 10.3 in quotes with your distro.

already mounted or device busy "suse 10.3"
