Flash Drive won't format and now won't work.

I received a 128 Gig SanDisk flash disk. It had some stuff on it and not wanting to be responsible for any existing content I chose to format it overwriting everything with zeros.

At about 17% complete through the erase process, with about 3 to 4 hours to go, the process was interrupted. All attempts to start the formatting over again have failed either with or without the erasing process included. These attempts respond after some time with:
Quote:
Error formatting disk
Error synchronizing after initial wipe: Timed out waitingfor object
(udisks-error-quark,0)
Attempts to access the disk return:
Quote:
Unable to mount location
Can't mount file
I am using Mint 17.1 Mate

Is there any way to format this disk?
Any idea what went wrong so this does not happen again?

If it's not already installed, install gparted. Plug in your flash drive, open gparted and see what gparted reports as to the status of the partition structure of your flash drive. Then try deleting all existing partitions on the flash drive; create a new single partition on the flash drive and format the new partition.

+gparted

They start off bad and fail often.

Sandisk might still have a windows app to run that attempts to fix usb drives.

Guess you could try different computer.

Might have gotten warm and stopped.

Ok, thanks a lot guys that worked. I used Synaptic to download/install Gparted and found it to be so powerful that it took about 15 minutes to sort out how it works, But My praise to the guys who came up with it because, although not perfect, it has one of the best help files I have encountered in years. I could dope out a bit of the unfamiliar jargon (fortunately I am not an utter newbie but I had to use Wikipedia to find out what a tebibyte is [as if I will ever store that much data}) and it got the job done on the first try after I figured all the stuff I had to specify. The drive now works as desired and all the disk appears as a single large partition. As to its size it is now 125.5 (real gigabytes).
Your help was much appreciated
