firmware download/install for Brother multi-function network printers
 

I have a Brother MFC-8660DN multi-function printer running on the network and runs well as a scanner/printer for linux workstations.

I'd like to upgrade the firmware, but all I found from Brother's website is a firmware upgrade tool for Windows. I can't seem to find the actual firmware file that I can install through tftp (the printer seems to have a way to connect to tftp server to install the firmware.)

I don't have easy access to a windows PC, and I tried running wine but complains java version is old even though it's the most up-to-date.

Is there a firmware file (not the upgrade tool) that I can download in some 3rd party sites?

Ok, 2 years and no reply.

Today, I managed to run the updater program for Mac OS/X in Linux since I found that it's just a Java program inside a dmg disk image.

I still have a problem. It eventually comes back with 'Cannot find a machine to update'. The printer is set up in cups driver, and I know OS/X uses cups driver.

Anyone succeeded in firmware upgrade of Brother multi-function printer from Linux?

I do not have the printer. Depending on the device, it may give a short time to change its firmware when it is first powered up. If you are updating from LAN, give both the printer and your computer a static IP address. Probably the Java client can not access through USB.

From what I learn in the past. Upgrading firmware when it is not giving you any problems is not smart. The update firmware could cause you problems that you did not have. I changed the firmware of my router because it gave me problems. I change my router to a third-party firmware.

I have not change the firmware of my Brother HL-5140 because it works with out any issues.

Java that comes from HP, Dell, or any computer company will have their own version. It is best to uninstall it and install Java that comes directly from Java's site.


BTW, Sorry that I did not reply because I have been sleeping. :D

I do have issues where sometimes when I print a page, the subsequent printing shows all garbage characters instead of normal letters, and the only solution is to re-boot the printer. This is why I was hoping the firmware upgrade would fix it.

I did try the stock Java from Sun, and the IcedTea that comes with Fedora. I didn't see Brother website having their own version of downloadable java.

I contacted Brother and they told me to spend $50 or so to have firmware updated from the service center. And I thought the original price included a way to do firmware upgrade.
