Firewire/USB 2.0 PCI PC card

I have installed a Firewire/USB 2.0 PCI card in my PC, a Dell. Whenever I try to use any of hte ports, USB or Firewire, nothing happens. When I attach a USB cable to one of the built in USB ports already in the PC, I have no problems getting access to that piece of hardware using it.

Do I have to mount the Firewire/USB card manually? I have installed Suse 10.0 and had actually thought that the installation process took care of all that for me. Am I wrong?

If so, what do I need to do to make sure that I have access to those ports every time?

Thanks for your help.

Went into Su mode and ran lspci and got the following output:

02:0a.3 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. IEEE 1394 Host Controller (rev 46)

It was, I think a generic Firewire/USB card but, if I'm reading the output properly, it has a VIA chipset.

Now what do I do?

When I plugin a device with either USB or Firewire into the PCI card, I don't get any messages on the screen. Where would I find the log file?

The output of the dmesg is the following:

look in /var/log/messages

if you type:
tail -f /var/log/messages
in the console, then plug in the device you should see the new messages on the screen.
then press ctrl+c to exit that mode

Ok,So now the USB works, that's fine, I would like to have the Firewire working, mainly because it's faster thatn USB, but also because I paid for it. :-)

i have a 3G iPod, 40GB drive. It has a cable with both USB and Firewire. When I plugin the USB I can access it via Konqueror, clicking on "Storage Media". When I plugin hte Firewire connector, nothing happens. I can sit watching the "Storage Media" icons in Konqueror, till the cows come home, and nothing happens.

If the firewire would work then I would attach an external HDD on to it. I prefer Firewire to USB for external HDD's because it is faster.

i don't have any firewire devices to help you test through this, but from i have read and seen you need to have firewire support either in the kernel or as a module, you can check out this site:
http://www.linux1394.org/
and google:
how to firewire linux
