firewall using 7.2 and an old 486????
ok here goes
I've got an old 486 that boots nicely into msdos 5. its a 66mhz with 16mb ram.
im trying to boot loadlin vmlinuz /root=?????.img
init img file locks at the RAMdrive section
other img files lock as well.
does anybody have advice on getting a decent img file for a 486...or...better still.....a msdos program to help me probe the hardware settings....
for some reason the bios setup wont work so it boots only to C: without reading the a: drive....so I cant use a boot floppy.

You really need a floppy drive anyway. They can be your only way to repair a system if something happens to it.
Or some other boot media.

The floppy drive does work....just can't boot with it as the BIOs is set to C: :-> A:
Suppose I could just remove the HD and use a floppy boot and RAMDISK?

thats my problem...I can't for some reason get into the BIOS. If I could I would change the boot sequence.
The bloomin motherboard doesn't have a battery, but a chip battery that is sealed.

you might need to put the boot image on a small bootable partition of your harddrive and install lilo to it. That way you can boot into the install and create partitions.
You will need to put the drive in another computer first to do it.
