Finding which application is using a device

Hello,

A brisk question and I'm off. I'm a SuSE 9.0 user. I recently encountered several problems relating to /dev/dsp being busy. Without getting into details, my question is this: how do I find out which process is using a particular device? (Hopefully any device I should care to specify, but, if such a function is not available, specifically /dev/dsp.)

Much obliged,

Thanks! Just what I had in mind.

(Unfortunately, turns out this isn't helpful - the command returns nothing, meaning that the problem is somewhat more complex. Rest assured, this isn't a chmod issue either. I suppose there are some things one has to tackle on one's own. At least I learned a new *nix command.)
