files reduced to 0 bytes
 

hi everyone. I don't usually write about the problems I run into because they are usually too complicated to explain or just too 'Murphy' like and I muddle through to a solution. However I've just found an interesting one. The other day I wanted to copy some files to another PC on my local network. The PC I'm copying from has Suse 9.1 (kernel 2.6.4-52) and the files I wanted to copy were on a scsi HDD (reisersfs). Before copying them to the 2nd PC I had to transfer them to a shared directory on PC1. I normally do this with with ctrl+ A, ctrl+C in the source directory, then change to destination window (Konqueror) then ctrl+V. This time I did a drag and drop but instead of asking me if I wanted to move or copy the files a shortcut was immediately created in the target directory. I didn't want a shortcut so I trashed it (I didn't delete it because I was worried that it might delete the source directory) I then copied and pasted all the files in the way I described above and later copied them over to the 2nd PC for back up purposes. When I examined the files on PC2 I found that all the files are 0 bytes except the *.xml files. When I checked the originals on the scsi drive they too are now 0 bytes. My problem is how to recover them because technically they haven't been deleted so I don't know if dd_rescue will find them. A reiserfs check finds no problems with the drive. Has anyone got any ideas?

have you looked up on trash? May be it's stupid, but if you didn't thought about that before, may be a good idea :)

Thanks for reply and nothing is stupid with PC's when 'Murphy' is at work.
Yes I tried the trash and on PC1 the folder (sdb1) is there but it's completely empty.
One thing that is playing on my mind is that in Control Centre>KDEcomponents>File Manager there is a 'Tab' for 'Quick Copy and Move' in which there is an option to store in cache the last (5) folders. What I'd like to know is where the cache is!
