fedora - no sound thru speakers

hi, i am running fedora-11 live-usb 64-bit on an hp elitebook 6930p and for some odd reason the builtin speakers don't work. i can hear sound if i plug-in headphones (even a usb-powered head-set works) but not the built-in speakers (they work under windows).
Code:
[liveuser@localhost ~]$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
i played around with every option in the 'sound preferences' applet but nothing seems to work (it definitely isnt muted).
i ran alsamixer and master and captur are set to 100.
whats weird is when i hit the speaker unmute button on the laptop case i hear a low "pop" from the speakers.
has anyone got the speakers to work on this laptop ?

some times the mute check box gets checked

it might be the pcm control
see : System / Preferences / Advanced Volume Control
or System / Preferences / Control Centre / Advanced Volume Control

well fedora has had sound issues since fedora 8 so...
but your description is almost always that something is muted.
