Fedora i386 on intel E6750 Core 2 Duo Cpu
 

Hi
i am using Fedora i386 on an intel core 2 duo cpu model is E6750.
Will i386 damage my computer or reduce performance?

Should i switch to Fedora x86_64?

It will not hurt the hardware.

Whether or not to go 64bit is a choice that will depend on your system and what you do with it. If you are running over 2gb of ram then you should switch to 64 bit (32bit limit). If you are doing heavy number crunching(converting videos etc) then you should go to 64bit. Other than that it is a tough call. A couple of versions ago it would have been easier as there were limitations to running 64 bit (then you could not use flash), but now those issues have been cleared up.

But there still isn't a 64 bit firefox java plug-in and nspluginwrapper doesn't help in this particular case. The only satisfying option is using a 32 bit browser on a 64 bit OS. Not that it's difficult to do if you do need the plug-in .

I run Fedora 8 64bit and icetea(default on install) has handled all the java stuff I have ran into. Flash works fine as well.

I know, I use icedtea too but apparently it isn't failsafe. I can't say whether that is correct or whether there is simply some clumsiness involved in those cases but open source java does have a history of being more limited than the proprietary version.

Thanks lazlow but I don't experience any issues myself. Just hearsay, you know. I recently reinstalled Debian and while I was looking doing my research, I came across some complaints about icedtea. They may well have been a matter of clumsiness on behalf of those posters, especially since icedtea isn't available from the Debian repositories yet..
