I just installed Fedora Core 5 (FC5). Was previously running FC4 and my HP ScanJet 5300C scanner was working fine in FC4. I did NOT upgrade from FC4 to FC5. I did an install from scratch of FC5, reformatting all partitions except /home.
Now in FC5, The GIMP cannot acquire the scanner. I executed the sane-find-scanner command and got this output,
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x0701) at libusb:001:005
Then I executed the "scanimage -L" command and got this output,
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
So I started reading documentation and ended up in the /etc/udev directory where I found a file named 60-libsane.rules. Reading that file, I find a rule for the ScanJet 5300C scanner. The text of the SYMLINK attribute in that rule is "scanner-%k". So I did "ls -l /dev/scanner*" and got this output,
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Apr 2 12:34 /dev/scanner-usbdev1.5 -> bus/usb/001/005
Then I did "ls -l /dev/bus/usb/001/005 and got this output,
crw------- 1 ted root 189, 4 Apr 2 12:34 /dev/bus/usb/001/005
Note that ted is the user that is currently logged in to the console.
So, next I put in this command "scanimage -d hp:/dev/scanner-usbdev1.5", and got back,
scanimage: open of device hp:/dev/scanner-usbdev1.5 failed: Error during device I/O
I also tried sending the "scanimage-d" command straight to the /dev/bus/usb/001/005 device and got the same output back.
So, it seems that udev is functioning correctly and creating the correct devices and permissions for the scanner to work correctly. However, The GIMP is unable to find the scanner and the "scanimage -L" and "scanimage -d" commands are unable to find the scanner.
Is this a driver issue? If so, how do I get/install a new driver? I have already been to the HP web site. They have drivers available for all Windows and MAC OSes but none for Linux.
Any other ideas on what to try next?
