Fedora Core 4 Sound Problems
 

Hey everyone,

I've seen this problem floating around online in several forums before, however I have not seen a solution to it... :(

I'm running Fedora Core 4 (Stentz), and have a Creative Labs Ensoniq ES1370 [AudioPCI] -- as detected by Fedora. I've got everything plugged in correctly, checked KMix, and alsamixer for muted settings and when I attempt to play the test sound, or play a .wav file, for example, I get no sounds. :eek:

I tried opening a .wav file in Helix Player, and when I pressed the play button, I received this error message:

Error
Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it

I'm not sure what would be causing that issue. I've seen on another forum that someone suggested looking in the third tab of KMix for a setting called External Amplifier and turning that on/off. I've looked for this in KMix and have not been able to find this option.

The one thing that I have yet to do is any updates to the system since the Stentz release was released. I don't have any internet plugged into my linux box quite yet. :(

If anyone has heard of any solutions or has any suggestions that I might be able to try without having to do any updates would be geratly appreciated.

Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
 

Fedora Core 4 recognizes my sound card (a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS) but there is no sound. I see in the HCL forum that several people get that card top work with some set of drivers called ADSL (?)(I should have written it down) but there is no indication of where to get these drivers, nor of how to get them working. Advice would be VERY much appreciated.

I have the same card as you and there was a really easy fix to get the sound working. If you are running Gnome right click on the speaker in the top left corner of the screen and go to preferences. Then go to the preferences option in the drop down menu. This should give you a bunch of options you can add to the alsamixer gui. Add the one that mentions "digital out" or something along those lines. Try checking or unchecking to see if your sound works. That is what I did and it worked for me. Hope this helps.

Thanks!! I am using gnome, and while my system seems to be set up a bit different from yours, you certainly pointed me in the right direction, and I got sound quickly by fiddling with the preferences menu under the speaker icon. In my case the key thing was to check the "speaker jack" box which popped up, while I was thrashing around, for reasons that I still don't understand.

I thank you too. Solution worked perfectly. Just repeating the steps so that more people can benefit:

1) double click on the audio icon on the tray
2) in the window that opens, select the tab Switches
3) now select Preferences in the Edit menu
4) in the Volume Control Preferences window, make sure Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack is selected and press the Close button
5) this will cause the Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack option to appear in the Switches tab. Make sure it is checked and your sound should play fine!
