fedora core 2 soundcard problem

I just installed FC2 on my gateway laptop and the sound is not working. The card shows that it is detected and it is the intel on board card with the following entry in the /etc/modprobe.conf " alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0." I have read a few posts on this similar problem and I have tried checking the default volume that others talked about. However, this is still not solving my problem. Whenever I try to play something in say xmms the little popup window comes up that says check the connection to the computer and the output in the terminal says the following "** WARNING **: alsa_setup(): Failed to open pcm device (default): Device or resource busy." I hope this helps and thanks for the help in advance.
