fedora 9 gnome gui is very slow

I have done a new fedora install on a pentium D based desktop.
I have a problem with the Gnome gui. It is very slow. Firstly the panel and the applets load very late. Also the respone of the desktop items is very slow. For example, browse folder menu item brings up the nautilus after 5 secs or so.
The wm is metacity and I tried out as both root and a normal user.
Can someone help me out.
thanks in advance
