All of sudden my Fedora 14 machine went to blank screen during startupprocess. I upgraded from 12 to 13 and then 14 last week and it worked fine for a week.
I have Dell Optiplex 760 with builtin Intel Q43 video card.
I have looked for the solution online, but it seems like it is driver issue. I couldn't find the compatible driver yet. I would appreciate your help.
This really sounds to be a hardware issue more than OS. I have the same issue at work with the 780 series but they are using an ATI card. You also did not mention if it is a Dell monitor. There are known issues with Dell LCD's going into a sleep mode. Connect another monitor if possible and or try a second video card. To solve at work we have been able to thus far re-seat the video card. Of course this is not possible in your case. Finally to rule out software, try a live cd of Fedora or another distro.
I have tried live CD (Ubuntu) and it worked fine. I have also tested with external monitor, unfortunately I get the same problem. I don't have a spare VGA card to test. I think it's to do with the Intel driver. Please help me install the driver, I couldn't even locate online, it for Intel Q43 display card.
Can you get a VESA display by adding nomodest to the kernel line in grub? When Grub loads press 'e' and add nomodeset to the end of the kernel line. If you can get a display after that then try reloading the Intel driver from the package manager. Sorry I could not be as helpful as you need. Hopefully you can get some kind of video and post more output of the hardware and what is loading. Lspci and modprobe would be a good start. You say it worked for a week then went black, was there an update? Can you get to a prompt to look at logs? You could re-install keeping the same partition structure and go from there. Good luck.
Having searched for many hours, I found out that the Intel display driver is still an issues with latest Fedoras. It also very difficult to get the right display driver for Intel. However, I have managed to make my own driver thanks to various random Linux forums it's now working.
Since it was working for a week I would keep a close eye on updates. Obviously something must have come through that changed the video for you. If you could post what you did it might help someone else too.
